Why have we built this app?
Our vision is for a “Built for a Better World” and this app is a physical realisation of this. A better, safer world for everyone on the road. Use of mobile phones while driving is a big problem on Irish roads. Road Safety Authority Research has shown that making a call while driving will make a driver four times more likely to crash, while texting makes crashing a staggering twenty-three times more likely. Too many people still drive while on their phone to take a call, text, snap a selfie, update their social media channels or check an email. Even glancing at a phone when it lights up is a distraction. So as part of our brand promise of being Built for a Better World, Toyota Ireland has developed this app for all drivers with the aim of changing driver behaviour and improving road safety for everyone. How does the app work?
The Toyota FaceItDown app uses your phone’s location tracking GPS to track how many kilometres you have driven without picking up your phone, and tracks that your phone is kept in a screen down position whilst tracking is active – hence ‘FaceitDown’! When you are finished your journey, each kilometre you’ve travelled without picking up your phone will result in a point, and when you have accumulated enough points, you will be given rewards.
How does the points system work?
You earn one point per kilometre travelled in an individual journey without interacting with your phone. Points from individual journeys are added together until you reach a reward milestone. You must travel a minimum of 1 km per journey to get points.
Will I be rewarded for frequent use of the app?
Yes! There are long-term achievements built into the app which earns you bonus points when you unlock them. The more journeys you make in a row without interacting with your phone, the more you’ll be rewarded. You can see which achievements you have unlocked so far in your bonus journey points screen.
What counts as an interaction with my phone?
We advise you to deactivate Bluetooth on your phone, before starting a journey. Remember it’s only ever safe to use your phone once you’ve finished your journey, stopped car and then pressed the Finish Button. Remember, if you lift your phone while driving, you will lose the points earned for that journey.
Can I use my phone while the car is stopped in traffic?
No, you can’t pick up your phone at all once the app tracking is in progress. Once you do, unless you are finishing your journey, you will lose your points. Will anyone see my driving data? The app uses an automated process to record the distance of each journey. All data is completely confidential and will not be shared with third parties. Please refer to the T&Cs for more information.
How do I claim my rewards?
When you have built up enough points, the reward will show in your ‘Available Rewards’ list. Tap the reward you want to redeem, the points will be deducted from your total, and the reward will move to your ‘Saved Rewards’ list. When you’re ready to redeem your reward in a Topaz Restore store, go to your ‘Saved Rewards’ and tap on the one you want to use. You’ll get a unique QR code, which you then show to the cashier in store.
What kind of rewards can I claim?
Redeem your points at any of the 153 Topaz Re.Store nationwide for any Hot Drink of your choice including a range of coffees with a variety of strengths and flavours, a full range of teas including specialty teas such as Camomile, Earl Grey, Green Sencha, Peppermint & Spearmint, White Cranberry and Red Berries. Or why not choose a rich, smooth hot chocolate instead.
Where does your data on road safety come from?
All facts on road safety in the app are sourced from statistics supplied by the Road Safety Authority.
Do I need to be connected to the internet to use the app?
Yes, you’ll need a 3G/4G connection to allow the app to track your progress, to reward your points for a journey and also to be able to claim and redeem your rewards.
How much battery do I need?
You will need to have enough battery so that your phone is on in order for the app to be able to track. If your phone turns off during a journey it will be unable to track and you will lose any points.
How do I erase my journey history?
For a request to permanently erase your journey history, please send a request to email@example.com from the email you use to login to the app with the request.
